Michigan's Upper Peninsula is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac and feels like a different world. The population is sparse, the forests are vast, and the waterfalls are genuinely spectacular. It's also one of the most dog-friendly regions in the Midwest, partly because the culture here has always included dogs as working partners rather than accessories.
"The Upper Peninsula has a working-dog culture that goes back generations. Your dog won't just be tolerated here. They'll be celebrated."
Cross the Bridge and Head to Tahquamenon Falls
Cross the Mackinac Bridge and head west on US-2. The drive itself is beautiful, hugging the northern shore of Lake Michigan. Stop in St. Ignace for coffee and a walk along the waterfront before heading into the interior.
Tahquamenon Falls State Park is the crown jewel of the eastern UP. The Upper Falls is one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi and dogs are welcome on all trails. The 4-mile trail connecting the Upper and Lower Falls runs through old-growth forest and is one of the best dog hikes in Michigan.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Pictured Rocks is 42 miles of Lake Superior shoreline with multicolored sandstone cliffs, sea caves, and waterfalls. Dogs are welcome on most trails with a leash. The Chapel Loop is the most spectacular hike in the park and dogs can do the entire 10-mile route.
Stay in Munising, the gateway town to Pictured Rocks. The town is small but has several dog-friendly motels and a good diner called Dogpatch Restaurant, which has outdoor seating and is very welcoming to dogs.
Marquette and the Keweenaw Peninsula
Marquette is the largest city in the UP and has a surprisingly vibrant downtown for a city of 20,000. The Noquemanon Trail Network has over 100 miles of trails right from the city and dogs are welcome everywhere. Ore Dock Brewing Company has a large outdoor area that is very dog-friendly.
If time allows, drive out to the Keweenaw Peninsula, the northernmost point of Michigan. The copper mining history is fascinating and the scenery is dramatic. Brockway Mountain Drive near Copper Harbor has panoramic views of Lake Superior and dogs can enjoy the overlooks with you.
Practical Tips
- Black flies are brutal in the UP from late May through June. Pack bug spray and a head net for your dog if traveling during this window.
- Cell service is spotty throughout the UP. Download offline maps before you go.
- The UP has a short tourist season. Many businesses close after Labor Day. Plan accordingly.
