Cape Cod in July is crowded, expensive, and genuinely difficult with a dog. Most beaches ban dogs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. But from September through May, the Cape transforms. Beaches open to dogs, prices drop significantly, and the towns feel like they belong to the locals again. Off-season Cape Cod is one of the best dog road trips on the East Coast.
"In summer, Cape Cod barely tolerates dogs. Off-season, it belongs to them."
The Upper Cape: Sandwich and Falmouth
Start in Sandwich, the oldest town on the Cape. Heritage Museums and Gardens allows leashed dogs on the grounds and the fall foliage is spectacular. The Shawme-Crowell State Forest has miles of trails and is very dog-friendly year-round.
Falmouth has a long bike path that runs to Woods Hole and dogs are welcome on the path year-round. The town center has several restaurants with outdoor seating that stay open through the shoulder season.
The Mid-Cape: Hyannis and Chatham
Hyannis is the commercial hub of the Cape and not the most charming destination, but it has good lodging options and serves as a useful base. The Kennedy Memorial on Ocean Street has a nice waterfront walk and dogs are welcome.
Chatham is one of the prettiest towns on the Cape and worth a full day. Harding's Beach allows dogs off-season and the views of Nantucket Sound are beautiful. The Chatham Fish Pier is a great spot to watch the fishing boats come in with your dog.
The Outer Cape: Wellfleet and Provincetown
The Cape Cod National Seashore allows dogs on most beaches from October 1 through May 14. This is the main reason to visit off-season. The beaches here are wide, wild, and stunning, and off-season you may have miles of shoreline entirely to yourself and your dog.
Provincetown at the tip of the Cape is famously welcoming and off-season it's a genuinely magical place. Commercial Street is walkable with your dog and many shops and galleries welcome dogs inside. The Beachcomber in Wellfleet is closed in winter but the beach access below it is open and spectacular.
Practical Tips
- Cape Cod National Seashore dog rules change on May 15. If you're visiting in spring, plan to leave before that date or check current rules.
- Off-season lodging on the Cape can be 40-60% cheaper than summer rates. Many places that don't allow dogs in summer relax their policies off-season.
- Bring layers. Off-season Cape Cod weather is unpredictable and the wind off the ocean is real.
