Oregon's Highway 101: The Ultimate Pacific Coast Dog Trip

Oregon's coastline is 363 miles of dramatic cliffs, wide sandy beaches, and small fishing towns. What makes it exceptional for dog owners is the sheer amount of off-leash beach access. Oregon state law gives the public access to the entire ocean shore, and many stretches allow dogs off-leash. Pair that with a string of genuinely dog-welcoming towns and you have one of the best coastal road trips in the country.

"Oregon has more off-leash beach access than almost any other coastal state. Your dog will not believe their luck."

Astoria to Cannon Beach

Start in Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River. The town has a Victorian-era waterfront and a surprisingly good food scene. The Astoria Riverwalk runs 6 miles along the waterfront and is perfect for a morning walk with your dog before hitting the road.

Cannon Beach is one of the most photographed spots on the Oregon Coast. Haystack Rock rises 235 feet from the beach and dogs are allowed on the beach year-round, though leash rules vary by season. Check current rules at the Cannon Beach visitor center.

Lincoln City to Newport

Lincoln City has a long stretch of beach with designated off-leash areas. D River Wayside is a popular spot where the world's shortest river meets the ocean and dogs can run freely in the designated zone.

Newport is home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium and a charming bayfront district. The Bayfront is very walkable with your dog and several restaurants have outdoor seating. Mo's Seafood is a local institution and the clam chowder is worth every calorie.

Florence to Brookings

The southern Oregon Coast gets progressively wilder and less crowded. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area near Florence is a surreal landscape of massive sand dunes and dogs are welcome in most areas. The dunes stretch 40 miles and reach heights of 500 feet.

End the trip in Brookings, just north of the California border. Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor has some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the state and dogs are welcome on all trails. The Natural Bridges viewpoint is a must-stop.

Practical Tips

  • Oregon beach rules vary by location and season. Always check current leash rules before letting your dog off-leash.
  • Bring a towel. Your dog will get wet. Multiple times.
  • Book lodging in Cannon Beach and Ashland well in advance. These towns fill up fast in summer.
