Door County juts into Lake Michigan like a thumb, and it's one of the Midwest's best-kept secrets for dog owners. The peninsula is dotted with small towns, state parks, and waterfront restaurants that genuinely welcome four-legged guests. We spent four days exploring with a 3-year-old golden retriever named Biscuit, and this is exactly how we'd do it again.
"Door County has more dog-friendly patios per square mile than almost anywhere we've visited. Bring your appetite."
Day 1: Arrive in Sturgeon Bay
Start your trip in Sturgeon Bay, the gateway to the peninsula. Check into the Bridgeport Resort, which sits right on the water and has a dedicated dog walk area along the canal. Dogs stay free and the staff keeps a jar of biscuits at the front desk.
After settling in, walk across the Michigan Street Bridge to the downtown area. Kick off the trip with dinner at Kitty O'Reilly's Irish Pub, where the outdoor patio welcomes leashed dogs and the fish tacos are worth the drive alone.
Day 2: Peninsula State Park
Peninsula State Park is the crown jewel of Door County and dogs are welcome on all trails on a 6-foot leash. The Eagle Trail offers stunning bluff views over Green Bay and is manageable for most dogs. Pack water because the trail has no facilities mid-route.
After the hike, drive up to Fish Creek for lunch. Summertime Kitchen has a large shaded patio and a rotating menu of locally sourced sandwiches. The staff brought Biscuit a water bowl without being asked.
Day 3: Ephraim and Sister Bay
Ephraim is one of the prettiest villages on the peninsula. Walk the beach at Anderson Dock in the morning before the crowds arrive. Dogs are allowed on the beach before 10am and after 5pm during summer months.
Head north to Sister Bay for the afternoon. Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant is famous for the goats on its grass roof, and the outdoor seating area is dog-friendly. Order the Swedish pancakes and watch your dog watch the goats.
Day 4: Newport State Park and the Drive Home
Newport State Park at the tip of the peninsula is a designated wilderness area and one of the least-visited spots in Door County. The trails are quiet, the forest is dense, and the Lake Michigan shoreline here feels genuinely remote. Dogs must be leashed but the park rarely feels crowded.
On the drive south, stop at Seaquist Orchards Farm Market near Ellison Bay. They sell cherry everything, and the parking lot is shaded with big trees perfect for a rest stop.
Practical Tips
- Book lodging early. Dog-friendly rooms in Door County fill up by May for summer weekends.
- Bring a long leash. Many beaches and parks require 6-foot leashes specifically.
- Check the Door County Visitor Bureau website for current dog beach hours before you go.
